1. How Decorators Price Wallpaper Hanging
Wallpaper hangers usually price work in one of four ways: per roll, per square metre, per room, or by day rate. Each suits different jobs, and published guides use different units, so it helps to know which one you're comparing. All of the figures below are guides only and will vary with your walls, your paper and your location.
Per square metre: Checkatrade's painting and decorating cost guide gives about £12 to £16 per m² for labour only.
Per room: the same Checkatrade guide puts wallpapering a room at around £350 to £500, labour only.
Survey range: Which?'s painter and decorator cost survey found £260 to £2,950 to line and paper a room of about 4.4m by 3.3m, with the customer supplying the paper and no old paper to remove, excluding VAT.
Day rate: Bark's painting and decorating price guide suggests £150 to £400 a day for wallpapering.
Per-roll pricing is common too, but we couldn't find a reliable published UK per-roll figure to quote, so ask each decorator directly.
2. Why Wallpaper Quotes Vary So Much
The huge range in Which?'s survey reflects how different wallpaper jobs can be:
Paper type: standard pre-pasted or paste-the-wall papers are quicker to hang than heavy vinyls, grasscloth or delicate hand-printed papers.
Pattern repeat: large drop-match patterns create more waste and take longer to line up.
Wall condition: uneven or damaged walls need filling, sanding and often lining paper first.
Obstacles: windows, sockets, radiators, alcoves and sloping ceilings all slow the job down.
3. Stripping Old Paper and Lining
Many homes have old wallpaper that has to come off first. Bark's guide lists wallpaper removal at hourly rates of up to around £40. Stubborn layers, painted-over paper or damaged plaster underneath can take far longer than expected.
Lining paper is often recommended on older walls. It creates a smoother base, helps the decorative paper adhere and can hide minor imperfections. It adds materials and labour, but it can make the finished result look much better.
Important: ask whether your quote includes stripping, making good and lining. Wallpaper quotes that leave these out can look much cheaper than they really are.
4. Feature Walls and Murals
A single feature wall is a popular way to use bold or expensive paper without covering a whole room. Bark's price list suggests about £250 to £700+ for a wallpapered statement wall, compared with £100 to £300 for a painted one. Murals and large-format panels need careful setting out, and specialist products may need specialist experience.
5. Who Buys the Wallpaper?
Most homeowners choose and buy their own wallpaper, and most published prices, including Checkatrade's and Which?'s, are for labour only. Before ordering:
Ask your decorator to measure and calculate how many rolls you need, allowing for pattern repeat and waste.
Buy all rolls from the same batch, as colour can vary between batches.
Order a spare roll for future repairs.
6. Questions to Ask Your Wallpaper Hanger
Have you hung this type of paper before? Can I see photos of similar work?
Is stripping, filling and lining included in the price?
How do you price: per roll, per m², per room or per day?
How many rolls should I buy?
What happens if a roll is faulty?

7. Planning a Wallpaper Project Step by Step
A little planning before you ask for quotes helps decorators price accurately and avoids delays on the day.
Choose your paper early. Some designer papers have long lead times. Order samples, look at them in your room's light at different times of day, and check the pattern repeat on the label.
Decide the scope. Is it one feature wall, a whole room, or a ceiling too? Ceilings and stairwells are much harder to paper and usually cost more.
Check the walls. Note any old paper, cracks, damp patches or painted-over paper. Take photos to send with your quote request.
Agree the order of work. If you're also painting ceilings and woodwork, these are usually done before papering so the paper isn't splashed.
Plan the room. Hangers need space for a pasting table and room to work around the walls, so clear the floor as much as possible.
Allow drying time. Paste needs time to dry, and small bubbles often settle out over a day or two. Don't judge the finish the moment it goes up.
Thinking through these points before you get in touch makes it much easier to compare like-for-like quotes and agree a realistic timescale.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to wallpaper a room?
Which? estimates around three days to line and paper a room of about 4.4m by 3.3m. A simple feature wall can often be done in a day, while complex patterns or poor walls take longer.
Is wallpapering more expensive than painting?
Usually, yes, for the same room. It needs more skill and time, and you also pay for the paper. Compare Checkatrade's figures for painting a medium room with its labour-only wallpapering prices to see the difference.
Can you wallpaper over old wallpaper?
It's generally not recommended. New paper can lift the old layer, and joins and bubbles may show through. Most decorators will strip back to a sound surface first.
Is lining paper always necessary?
Not always. Smooth, sound, freshly plastered walls may not need it, but uneven or older walls often benefit. Your decorator can advise after seeing the walls.
How Find A Decorator Can Help
Find A Decorator is a new UK marketplace that connects homeowners and businesses with professional painters and decorators. We're in our early, pre-launch stage, so we're still growing our network of decorators in each area. Decorator profiles cover 11 regions across Great Britain: Greater London, the South East, South West, East of England, West Midlands, East Midlands, North West, North East, Yorkshire & the Humber, Scotland and Wales. We don't cover Northern Ireland at the moment.
To get started, post your decorating job with as much detail as you can: room sizes, surfaces, photos and when you'd like the work done. You can read more about our wallpaper installation service, and if you have questions about how the platform works, our help centre explains the process step by step.
A clear job description gets more accurate quotes. Include the number and approximate size of the rooms or areas, which surfaces need painting, the current condition of walls and woodwork, whether you'll supply the paint, any access issues such as parking or stairs, and your ideal start date. The more a decorator knows up front, the fewer surprises there are later for both of you.
Final Thoughts
Published guides put labour-only wallpaper hanging at around £12 to £16 per m², or £350 to £500 per room according to Checkatrade, but Which?'s survey shows the range can be much wider. Stripping, lining, pattern and paper type make the difference, so ask for itemised quotes.
